By What do you think of when you hear the word masterpiece? Does the Mona Lisa come to mind? Sistine Chapel? When I hear the word masterpiece my mind automatically goes to the greats right? You know Da Vinici, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Monet, Picasso, Van Gogh, Beethoven, Mozart, Bach… you know the guys that have famous works that have been deemed as classics. Do you ever think of yourself as a masterpiece? I know that wrapping my head around that context is a hard to do most days. Let us take a quick look at what the scripture says.
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago (Ephesians 2:10).”
Now that is a way to see things. That verse puts a whole lot of perspective on things and maybe can help us change the way we view ourselves right? A masterpiece is a sometimes described as a person’s greatest piece of work. We are God’s masterpiece, his greatest piece of work that was made in Christ Jesus to do good things which He planned for us from the beginning. This recently hit me like a ton of bricks when someone complimented a gift that I have. My first response was something along the lines of well, you know I am not really that good at it, so and so is better than me at it, while never once acknowledging the compliment. Then this came to my mind and stopped me in my tracks mid text response and I deleted my response and had a little moment with myself. I had to remind myself of the truth, that I am God’s masterpiece created with a purpose and that I was insulting God’s work by not acknowledging the compliment. So after self-talk and reminding myself of all this I responded with a thank you.
How often do we in the church brush off compliments that are given to us. How often do preachers say that the sermon was not them but all God? Yes, God spoke through you but you did the work, you prayed, you studied and you were obedient and available for God to use. You could have chosen to watch Netflix and chill. While the gifts do come from God, we have the choice to use them or not. When people say something about our gifts we need to acknowledge them and say thank you for what we do, while giving glory to God and thanking Him for creating you the way He has. I know that I am going to still struggle a bit through this, but I am going to be paying attention to my responses more so that I can respond better.
